Duties: Within the 'Spectroscopy' Group you will work in close collaboration with the scientists in charge of the Instrument (experimentation station) IN16 and the other technicians of the group and you will carry out the following missions: • Perform maintenance work and undertake the necessary repairs on the instrument and associated equipment; • Assist in-house and visiting scientists with the preparation of their experiments; • Design new equipment in collaboration with ILL scientists and the technical support groups, search for optimum technical solutions; • Perform simple machining of mechanical parts (lathing, milling, drilling) accurately and at short notice, and assemble the analysers (gluing crystals); • Install, maintain and operate sample environment equipment, in particular cryostats, furnaces; • Organise the purchase of new equipment and spare parts; • Ensure compliance with the safety regulations, in particular those relating to nuclear safety.
Qualifications and experience: You have an NVQ Level 4 or equivalent qualification (e.g. BTEC HNC/HND) in Mechanical Engineering, together with experience in the production, assembly and alignment of precision mechanical assemblies, as well as in mechanical design. You are also be able to use CAD software. Experience of scientific instrumentation, in particular in the field of cryogenics, would be an advantage. This post requires a practical approach, a willingness to learn new techniques, a clear ability to work independently and on a wide variety of projects, as well as the necessary interpersonal skills for working with the visiting scientists. Language skills: As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
