The Senior Database Engineer based in Madrid will design relational and non-relational database models. He/She closely work with engineers and architects to identify the most appropriate persistence mechanism for a given business feature. He/She collaborate with engineers on designing and implementing data layer in microservices and webapps. He/She be the steward of the conpany data -- ensure consistency and best practices across all databases.


Description

The Senior Database Engineer, will do:

 

 * Design relational and non-relational database models
 * Closely work with engineers and architects to identify the most appropriate persistence mechanism for a given business feature
 * Collaborate with engineers on designing and implementing data layer in microservices and webapps
 * Be the steward of the Returnly data -- ensure consistency and best practices across all databases
 * Identify and troubleshoot data-related production issues (together with engineers)
 * Be on the lookout for technology best practices and advocate for them
 * Perform "lite" database administration tasks (such as user management)
 * Participate in design and implementation of monitoring and disaster recovery strategies
 * Help data analyst build highly complex queries; be a data access optimization guru
 * Work with architects and devops to come up with scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective cloud infrastructure for Returnly data
 * Be integral part of a world-class team of engineers with decades of experience
 * Work cross-functionally with some of the best people in different disciplines like engineering, data science, finance, product management, marketing & sales, design


Profile

The Senior Database Engineer, will have:

 * B.S. degree equivalent (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering or related field is a plus
 * 5+ years of industry experience
 * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; attention to detail
 * High proficiency in SQL
 * Strong RDBMS fundamentals, including normal forms, data warehousing, different modeling techniques
 * Hands-on development and administration experience with at least one of the following databases: MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL
 * Expertise in translating business requirements to data needs
 * Understanding of and experience with NoSQL data stores such as Redis and DynamoDB
 * Exposure to Amazon Web Services
 * Backend programming experience in java, ruby, python, or golang is a strong plus
 * Courage and discipline to dig-in and refactor other team members' code and explore new technology and solutions
 * Prior history of driving impact in a high-growth e-commerce / technology startup is a plus
 * Desire to improve broken processes and make your own job easier over time
 * Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment
 * Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate and influence effectively across various departments
 * Command of the English language, both written and spoken
 * Data-driven mentality
